A Brief History of The Sudan Squadron

250 Squadron began life as K. Flight of 112 Squadron (The "Shark Squadron") on June 1st 1940.

The name "Sudan Squadron" was in recognition of a gift of ŁE 100,000 from the Sudanese Government - and the Squadron itself was formed in Palestine on April 1st 1941.

They fought throughout the North African and Italian theatres of operation as air support for the British Eighth Army, finally disbanding at Treviso, Italy early in 1947.

The story of the Squadron from 1940 until 1944 was detailed by Carel Birkby (then Managing Editor and War Correspondent of The Sudan Star) in his book "Close to the Sun".
